Great Australian Books

Posted by: ozzbooks on: January 23, 2010

In the rush to Australia day, I had a bright idea yes you guessed it another bright idea, I thought I would gather up some nice coffee table books take a photo or two and put them on the net you know the usual places.

Gee I should have got up early in the morning or late in the evening find a nice setting, kind of like what Rob Heyman’s does with his excellent portrait photography. Are you kidding Jim just get on with the story, you know your going sailing this afternoon.

While I’m picking through literally thousands of books I noticed the most of the titles had Great in the book title. How many books have Great in the title? Well let me see, a quick search from Google Books gives me this answer.

Books 110 of 24,678 on great australian. (0.16 seconds) how good is this? I’m not sure how accurate this is but its good enough for now. I will keep searching for these and more useless facts.

I have always know that Australia is the best place in the world, so many people usually foreigners have always told me Jim this is the best country in the world I think they meant Greatest but maybe they haven’t been here long enough. But didn’t know we had that many books with Great in the title.

How original are these publishers? Do they have a calendar on the wall marked with dates? lets make another Great book what time of the year is it? Then all they have to do is get new pictures, most of the stories have all been written, you know we can sell some of these great books on Australia Day Armistice Day Anzac Day, or whatever the event it is.  Lets pulp some more trees, sound like a good idea.

Presto it looks like I will shortly be getting another Great title to add to my already great collection of great Australian books.

The Woman Behind Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Posted by: ozzbooks on: December 13, 2009

Me being the mostly typical male just thought that Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888) was just that a book for girls and women, but in the usual fashion when you work in a bookshop.

I never stop learning about the hidden facets of these historical characters that I have firstly just ignored or discounted because of my prejudices, you know I don’t need to learn about that but it seems that this is always at a cost to my knowledge.

When I think about it it is probably only that when I wanted to read a book there wasn’t a copy of this book within reach. But one of my favorite pastimes is learning these details about people.

I just found this link take a look see what you think.

I also love to learn more about authors, people events, if you want feel free to send me, what you think is a good story.

I also have some Louisa May Alcott books please click to have a look.

I must have to much time on my hands, well not really but I was thinking of all the movies that have bookshop employee’s as characters in movies, okay I like watching movies oldies by choice.

Are there any other people that have this interest I would love to hear from you.

Tell me the ones  you know, I know about two or three,

The Big Sleep Joan Collins believe it or not

Notting Hill Hugh Grant “I thought he’d be an ebook man or do most of his reading in a car”

Clear and Present Danger don’t know the actor

Black Books the series on the ABC Australia don’t let Daryl & Hey Hey know

Used Books, Copyright & Google

Posted by: ozzbooks on: October 12, 2009

Most people probably don’t care about Google Book Settlement but this will have far reaching implications for the future of authors, readers, education, even the distribution of books for the future. Who knows what developments are around the corner, with the like of Kindle and other technologies.  Take a look at the Google Scanner I have included a picture below.

We need a discussion

I think that this needs to be discussed more fully by every person that reads a book, or will ever read a book.
So far it has worked well for me when I want a copy of an old title it has been very good, I simply search for the book usually that’s when I find out its out of print but we can print it for you.

We need to plan for the future

Maybe it means that authors need to think about what to do in the event of their own mortality plan to have someone continue the copyright.

What does this mean for all of the books that are currently out of copyright?

Even Rupert Murdoch, the owner of News Corp. and The Wall Street Journal has concerns. But Google have taken lots of their business

Friends Yachties Bookbinders and Bookshop owners

Posted by: ozzbooks on: October 8, 2009

Today I had arranged to get my bookbinder mate Rob & another book collecting buddy Allan to come and look at my new used hot stamping machine, I needed his expertise to show me how to set it up, to figure out how to attach the text blocks onto it. As usual he turned up at the expected time, after a cup of tea its down to the real work, give it a quick clean check all the features are working yes, now we have to design some blocks to hold the fonts.
While this going on who walks in but my yachting friends B&G from Newcastle called in to say hi, they wanted some help with gear of the internet. More tea for everyone. Now all the computers are doing double time book searches, yacht supplies from the USA, check emails.
Then we get a surprise visit from a bookshop owner she runs a really neat shop at Toukley just coming to visit see our shop, gee its small I thought it would be bigger, but its good to see her anyway.
All the while I have to do shop work posting of books answer emails update different links on the web answer the phone. What else can happen today? I wonder.

Internet and all the choices just to sell used books

Posted by: ozzbooks on: October 7, 2009

How many ways can I sell books? Well let me see  in a shop, catalog, ebay, your own site on the net. Please excuse the plug Lake Macquarie Secondhand Books With all the competition from other websites its imperative to get your business profile out there. One way you can do this is to take advantage of the social websites  you can put your details on the web for potential customers to visit your website. You can also list things you do better.

Twitter, Facebook, TeamCircle Book Marketing Network

They all help get your message out to the world at large. The more attention you give this the better result get.

But mentioning this you will need some help to implement these tips. One thing you can do is find someone to help.

A good place to start is business coaching one that I found particularly helpful is Design Business Engineering

Plus these sites seem to be growing quickly so don’t stand still & good luck.

Spring into Summer

Posted by: ozzbooks on: September 10, 2009

We have a nice variety of health and fitness books as well as massage.  The benefits of all of these combined is wonderful.  I can comment personally about the benefits of massage having had a shoulder injury, the massage therapist not only worked on the injured shoulder but also areas around the shoulder as well.  The man to see to help out with your remedial massage is Michael Cowan at Mirrabooka.  Massage helps with circulation and get a good blood flow to the injured area.

We have a selection of books for men as well as women, Sports Massage and Stretching, The Fitness Leader”s Handbook, Body in Action and many more. Now is a good time to begin your exercise plan to get in shape for summer and shed some of those winter pounds.

Books: A Memoir by Larry McMurtry

Posted by: ozzbooks on: August 18, 2009

I was looking for some books on a subject that I forget but in my quest to find the particular book I came across this book Books: A Memoir by Larry McMurtry on the net so next thing I have ordered it from a dealer.

Now all I have to do is wait, it arrived soon enough & I started to read it, what a goldmine of information about book collecting mainly U.S.A.  But really its an excellent book for those of us that like to pursue old books or rare books, paperbacks, hardcovers & pamphlets. Who would ever want to go to Woodstock & get muddy, smashed and stoned when you could go back in time and see all of the the shops he mentions and discover a treasure or two.

I know that I will be reading this again for the information that is on every page. From the people he worked with and for the characters he met, the towns & shops he visited.

He runs a bookshop Booked up inc in Archer City Texas  it reportedly has some four hundred thousand books thats a lot books Larry.

Do you know any books like this that you think I might like? I’m always looking for interesting stories on book collectors any country.

Outback Tales Outback Tales by Chesney Gardner

This a book written by Chesney Gardener he worked for ABC Radio from Newcastle. It is a compilation of short stories about old Australia, well before mobile phones why the only person that I knew that had a phone like that was Dick Tracy, when an air bag was a balloon, when seat belts & children’s safety seats didn’t exist. The closest we came to the internet in science fiction movie.
